Thai Tourist Visa run to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers

I have written before about doing a Thai-Visa run to Vientiane, Laos, but I’ve just done practically the same process in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia.  So in this article I’m going to very simply layout the basics you need to know about the Thai visa via Malaysia.

Where to go, What to bring, and When

The Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur is located on Jalan Ampang, about 15minutes walk east from the Twin Towers.  You can get there by taxi, obviously, but it’s only a short walk from the Ampang Park rail station, on the Putra LRT line – when you exit the station, walk in the opposite direction from the twin towers, keeping to the left side of the road.

You will need (at the time of writing):

  • One passport photo (taken within the last 6 months)
  • Your passport
  • There is NO fee.  Tourist visa application fee has been officially waived until 31st April 2011.  Hoorah!

Apparently you need, but I’ve never really needed them:

  • In Vientiane, I needed 2 photographs and a photocopy of my passport identity page and so I duly provided exactly the same in KL. However they handed back the extra photo and the photocopy.  Personally, I would still bring these with you since ‘you’re better looking at them, than looking for them’ if requirements changed on short notice.
  • Proof of your planned entry into, and exit from, Thailand.  I never provided any and stated my entry would be by bus/train.

As in Vientiane, there are 2 stages to tourist visa application:

  1. Submission: Done in the morning between 9:30am ~ 1:00pm. When entering the consulate office proper, pick up a numbered ticket (it comes in 2 pieces so be sure to take both). Wait until you’re called and submit your application form (that you will have been provided with upon entering the grounds) with your photo, passport, and numbered tickets.  One of the numbered-tickets will be returned to you attached to a receipt.
  2. Visa and Passport pick-up: Come back after 2:30pm (and before 4pm) the following working day with your numbered ticket + receipt combo and simply pick up your passport, hopefully with your visa inside.

When I did it, it was shortly after the protests and political unrest in Thailand of early 2010 and there was unsurprisingly, hardly the numbers of people applying for visas as I expected.  This is likely to change however, so you may want to queue early for either or both of these stages if you’re in a hurry.

The visa application process is painless as you can see.

Good luck!

If you have any updates to provide on this guide if the situation has changed, please do so below.  Thank you!

There are really fun places to visit in Kuala Lumpur. The must see is th KLCC( twin towers) going up the bridge that is connecting the bridge is about RM 40 but it is worth the 40 buks you spend. If you looking for a hotel check out the prescott inn medan tuanku they have really good promotions. Night life Bukit Bintang is the best.
