Well this is my first post after leaving for Bangkok on 7th, and for good reason. It’s been eventful, but not quite as wonderful as I might have at-first hoped.
I got in on the 8th after more than 24hrs travelling, to find the hostel I wanted was fully booked. I promptly booked it for the following 3 nights and found myself an alternative for the first evening. The first day or so was one of acclimatization and jet-lag, and I was thoroughly unproductive.
I met a friend for dinner on the 9th and made the school-boy error of drinking water with ice. The lesson to be learned here is, don’t drink water with ice. The following day I came down with “food poisoning” and I’ve bed-ridden ever since. With the assistance of my friend I made it through yesterday fed and watered, coming out relatively unscathed. Today I’m quite groggy with the remnants of yesterday’s fever, but nothing a paracetamol with a good sleep wont cure.
I don’t know if they made a huge difference, but the pharmacy recommended charcoal tablets to absorb some of the toxins in my system… it makes sense that it would help, but either way I’m holding on to my remaining tablets just in case.
And that’s been my holiday so far. Good times! Not what I was expecting, but hopefully by the end of today I’ll be more or less completely over it and I’ll then make my way up to Nong Khai in the next day or so. My brain is a little foggy at the moment, so I promise the next update will be a little more coherent.
Just a word on the hostel, Lub D. I found it online based on the reviews, but it was then also recommended to me separately and I have to say it is one of the best hostels I’ve been in. It costs not a lot, it’s clean, has great security, free internet, decent location and a buzzing vibrant atmosphere.
